Lord, my faults have alienated me from You. For reasons I do not comprehend, despite everything I have done, You still love me and do not want to punish me. In Your great, unexplainable mercy, You gave Your only Son to pay the penalty for my failures. Thank You for that sacrifice for me. I am so grateful for that undeserved act of love. Help me live a life that is worthy of that love. Amen.

Landlord from Heaven

I was in the market for professional office space for my expanding talent promotion business. After much review I found a really cool office building in Calabasas. Calabasas is the westernmost city in the San Fernando Valley of Los Angeles County, the home to many of the studios in Los Angeles: Disney, Warner Brothers, and Universal, just to name a few.

I spotted a clean, modern architecture building with a Southern California Spanish look. The underground parking sold me. This must be crazy expensive, I thought. I called the owner’s leasing agent, who said his name was Jeff, and I set a time to meet him at suite 108.

When I walked into the suite, I instantly fell in love with the space. I got that this-is-the-place feeling. “I love it,” I said. “How much?”

“Well,” Jeff said, “let’s go to my office and see what we can do.”

Knowing it was time to start talking money, I explained to Jeff that I had none. My business was a startup. I was borrowing every dime to get started.

After sympathetically listening to my sob story, he said, “Here’s what I can do: I can temporarily give the space to you month to month for a buck a square foot, but I will continue to show it, and if someone is willing to pay the going rate, you match it or you’re out. After one year, the rent goes up to the going rate, which is double what I just quoted you.”

“Great. That sounds super fair,” I said. “Let me talk to my husband and I’ll be in touch.”

When Brice looked at the space, he loved it. He was a bit suspicious about the low price, but he said, “If the price he gave you is true, let’s do it. I am absolutely in.”

I called Jeff and told him we had a deal and set up a meeting time to sign the lease.

The next afternoon Brice and I arrived at the Calabasas building, where Jeff’s office was. As we walked in, the grand glass and black marble spiraling staircase was a bit intimidating. With my high heels on, it felt as if anyone within a ten-mile radius could hear me clomping up those stairs. As we reached the top, we saw a beautiful, all-glass conference room on our left, and a sweet little old receptionist greeted us from the right side of the reception landing.

“Hi,” I said. “We’re here for Jeff, to sign a lease.”

“Sure,” she said. “Have a seat. He will be right with you.”
